Guerrilla Milonga

A cool concept, everyone agrees. Pick a public place (indoors during the winter) with a decent floor surface, bring some music, and start dancing. Should the guards/cops ask you to leave, you just move to the next designated spot.

Too bad no one comes to these things. Today I had to cancel the third one in a row as I only had two other people "confirmed" (aside from me and Deb) and a couple more "maybe"s.

I'm throwing in the towel.

I've always been intrigued by the idea of flash mobs and dance. And I mentioned a 2004 tango flash mob a couple years ago - here and here. And wrote post recently about flash mobs and dance.

Can I ask how you promoted yours? Are you going to give it another try?

That does sound like a cool idea...

[I thought about it in the context of "Random Acts of Dancing" (since we would be doing ballroon, latin, and swing)...but I never tried to organize it among my dancing friends and acquaintances since I'm fairly sure they'd balk at the last minute no matter how cool an idea they thought it was originally...]

I wish you success in your effort! :)

Hi Sorin,

Well, I've seen guerrilla milongas work, and I'd suggest that you don't throw the towel yet. First of all, there's nothing wrong with just having a handful of people. Second, you are probably giving too short a notice; perhaps you need to get the people in your community used to the idea that these milongas will come up at some point, and then making them gradually/increasingly more and more espontaneous...

I always wanted to go into the space that was once Triangulo in the meat packing district and stage an impromptu tanda of pugliese. I believe the lovely space is now part of a restaurant. If you're ever up for it pls post well in advance and maybe try to advertise via yahoo tango groups?.... I'd be there!

My friend Darlene in Denver did this, albeit at the same location. She had some way of texting people en masse to let them know if it was on or off. You might contact her for some tips on this. Here is her myspace link: http://www.myspace.com/luv2dancetango
